Redwood Cross Section
Trail Thoughts and Musings
Although this is a second growth redwood tree that has fallen and cut to clear the trail, it provides a good example of the growth ring structure of the redwood species. The first thing that draws one's attention is the reddish brown color not only of the bark, but also the interior wood. The thin layer of wood just beneath the bark is the only living tissue of the tree. The prized heartwood is actually non-living tissue.
