Big Basin is aptly named, as the area around the park headquarters is surrounded by rising land on all sides. As you head west on Sunset trail, middle ridge must be ascended which lies at an elevation of 1200-1400 feet. Today, a light rain is falling which is accompanied by a thick mist. The redwoods take on a mystic aura as they loom in the fog.
