Ancient Manzanita

Trail Thoughts and Musings

This portion of the trail clings to the steeper south facing slopes of the hill. As a result, the microclimate is drier and chaparral predominates. Manzanita is one the larger plants to be found and lends its name to the trail. Some of these plants are truly huge specimens of the species. Here is an ancient Manzanita showing its tenacious hold on life. Its silvery bark shimmers in the bright sunlight.
