The hike to Vernal Falls would normally begin by walking through the Happy Isle complex and crossing the Merced River on the trail south of the Nature Center. Unfortunately, nature has not been kind to this area recently. First a major rock slide caused substantial damage to the buildings and the floods of 1997 closed the bridges. The park service has created this temporary alternate trail head.
