Soon the junction with the John Muir trail is reached. This will be your return route. Continuing straight ahead, a small gate is soon reached. Off to the left is a short scramble to the Merced where a magnificent view of Vernal Falls can be had. It is well worth the small effort required. Once you have drunk in the beauty of the falls, return and continue past the gate to the infamous Mist trail.
