Dear Joe Strelecki
Thank you for your interest and the acknowledgement of the Shipmates Flag Program. The first section of the package you have received is the complete program script used to perform for our Fifth-Grade students and adult groups, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. If you would like to share this with other Military Organizations, this package is put together so that copies can be made. Please reference the Mid Mon Valley Shipmates. If you can get a group together who commits to performing this presentation copies will need to be made for each presenter. It is important that each person becomes familiar with the piece that they are reading. As you read through the different sections the Second Section: Directors Copy Script and Directions for Presenters; will be where the movements of the presenters are explained. As with any performance, it is better when everyone knows what to say and where to be.
The Third section is a complete reference and information section. It may help when the children or adults start questioning when you solicitate them for questions. If there are any questions about anything in this document, please contact me. This letter will be included with any copy sent to or given to other groups, please!
On a personal note! This Presentation means a great deal to me. Since I joined the Shipmates and started going on the different schools, I have learned a great many things. One important aspect was the comradery of the men and women who performed along with me. The stories we shared, the humor and emotional responses raised by the script we speak to the audience allowing us to relate to our past service while in uniform.
The Mid Mon Valley Shipmates Flag Etiquette Committee prepared their Flag Etiquette Program for the School Years by contacting the school’s first by phone contact. As we built our contact list and history of visiting year after year, we transitioned to issuing letters with a listing of those schools visited the prior year. Statistics of the number of students and milage was presented to our group and other than milage was included in the letter of “Thanks” to the school asking to be brought back. Letters sent to the school’s is included in this package, so you understand how we turned the decision making to contact us as it related to the school’s schedule, in their control. It worked very well and helped us control the number, and the date and time, so to conformed to our schedule, as decided by the presenters. We paid our own way carpooling together and if out on the road during lunch between schools scheduled for the same day, each paid for their own meals. There was never a charge for this Presentation to schools or adult groups. There were several Adult Groups that contributed, and we did accept it with notification to the main group of the Shipmates. We pooled the cash for special times when we were on the road. As Professionals, we stood before an audience and played our parts, read our lines with clarity and at times emotions.
The program is available to all area schools, primarily to 5th grade students, and to area groups. The program is approximately 45 minutes and explains the history of our National Emblem “Old Glory”, the Flag Code addresses disrespect and the proper respect for the Flag: The Pledge of Allegiance: The National Anthem: and includes a stirring poem about the American Flag. The Shipmates do the proper folding of the flag as the meaning of each fold is explained. This is followed by three students repeating the folding of the flag. Time permitting, a Q&A is held, and the Shipmates are introduced giving a short history of their Navy duties, land, and sea assignments/experiences. The program concludes with the proper way to retire the flag at the end of the day.
