The trail now leaves the road behind as it climbs up a small ridge. In the early morning hours, it is not unusual for Big Basin to be enshrouded in fog. As the trail works its way up the slope, the mist can be seen hiding in and behind the trees on the hill side. The broken stump in the foreground is almost an iridescent green from the diverse moss covering.
