It appears that these redwood trees are growing in a circle as if growing around the edge of a bowl. The sunken area in the center is the location of the root system of an older tree no longer in existence. The trees you see now grew from the root crown of this missing ancestral tree. This is the principal way that Coast Redwoods reproduce.
