Volcanic landscapes have steep terrain and contain porous rocks. Water does not stay long on the surface, seeping quickly into the ground and reappearing elsewhere as springs. Lake Helen has no outlet stream. Instead, it feeds springs in this canyon which provide the source for East Sulphur Creek.
