Illilouette Falls
Trail Thoughts and Musings
As the trail starts to bend toward the East, always following the Merced, another canyon opens up along the south wall. This is the canyon formed by Illilouette creek. At its head is Illilouette falls which plunges 370 feet over a vertical cliff face. Although the name sounds French, it is actually the English corrupted version of an Indian word that was originally something like "tooloolaweack" which means place where to hunt deer.
