Taking its cue from the river, the trail heads to the East. The climb continues as the crossing of the Merced is approached. It is from this bridge that the first views of Vernal Falls can be obtained. It is also the turn around point for many of the people with whom you now share the trail. Note that the trail and river are strewn with boulders. Rock falls are a common occurrence at Yosemite.
