The trail steepens after the grove of redwoods and soon an unmarked trail split is reached. The easiest route is to take the sharp switchback to the left. Continuing straight will also lead to Pine Mountain road but is more strenuous. Either way, the trail will merge after a short distance with the service road. This road is very steep but must only be followed uphill for a short distance before the trail heads off to the right.
